Garstang 4 v Eagley 3 14th Feb

Garstang finished off winners of a somewhat scrappy game. It started badly minutes in as a Garstang player lashed out at Jack Horan from a throw in, which resulted in Jack retaliating and both players were given their early marching orders! This seemed to unsettle the Eagles and within minutes they found themselves a goal down. This was how it stayed until half time where Eagley were struggling to play the ball around on a somewhat ‘bobbly’ pitch.

They started out brightly in the second half but a lapse of concentration left the Garstang striker alone to beat Eagley’s keeper Tom Macdonald.

Eagley then made a double substitution with Nathan Emery and manager Whaley coming on for Mark Carroll and Matty Johnson. This soon had the desired affect with the Eagles getting one back with Jack Berry playing a through ball for Danny Vincent who made it 2-1. More Eagley pressure saw the ball fall to the feet of Whaley who sadly drove it over the bar but some sloppy Eagley play allowed Garstang in again for 3-1. Most thought this was the end for Eagley but they carried on battling and got another back to make it 3-2 and a draw still possible. A rash challenge by the Eagley defence then gifted Garstang a penalty but with Tom Macdonald to beat it was by no means a foregone conclusion. Yet again the Eagles shot stopper guessed right and saved it as the rebound also bobbled wide, but then Garstang kept up the pressure and got another to make it 4-2. In the dying minutes Whaley was awarded a penalty which he took himself to end it 4-3.

Other results mean its very tight at the foot of the West Lancs League with Eagley just holding on to 13th position.

After some recent good results it seemed the Eagles let themselves down today with an under par performance coupled with some bad luck, which cost them a result.

After a well-looked after pitch, the game was never in doubt unlike most others in the area and Eagley started the game well putting pressure on Hesketh from the off. After a well worked move the ball fell to Andrew Lindley in the box but with only the keeper to beat he blazed it over the bar, and with a couple more chances they just couldn’t make them count.

Against the run of play Hesketh’s shot took a bad deflection giving the Eagley keeper Tom Macdonald no chance, and it whistled over his head into the net for 1 nil.

Then soon after the onrushing Macdonald miskicked allowing the Hesketh striker in, who took it well from a tight angle for 2 nil.

Eagley kept trying and hit the bar, but with too many misplaced passes and failing to win those second balls they just couldn’t find that elusive goal.

Hesketh were then awarded a free kick and somehow the ball came into the box unchallenged, and before anyone knew it, the ball was in the back of the net for 3 nil, and that was the score at the break.

Eagley started the second half well and eventually got the goal with Ashley Watson making a good run to fire past the Hesketh keeper. But Hesketh soon scored again to restore their lead to make it 4.1

Then a bizzare incident where Hesketh were awarded a very soft penalty saw Tom Macdonald make a great save to his right to deny the 5th goal, but the referee decided there was an infringement and it was retaken. But Macdonald again made a great second save, and then the rebound too! to keep it at 4.

With only minutes to go Simon Neary rose high from an Eagley corner to head it home to close to the deficit to 4.2 and that’s how it finished.

Although unlucky at times today the Eagles were just not good enough and were beaten by a scrapping and hard working Hesketh side who left with all three points.

We caught up with manger Simon Whaley after the game who said – ‘ We were poor today, it happens sometimes and its not acceptable and the lads know it. We missed too many chances today especially in the first half, but they took theirs.’

The Eagles ran out 5-4 winners in a crazy game of football, where thanks to a hat-trick from central defender Simon Neary, and a brace from Player/Manager Simon Whaley, Eagley beat the visitors Thornton Cleveleys in a bizzare match.

The game was delayed until 2.15pm due to motorway traffic, and after 15 minutes the visitors were ahead after some sloppy defending let them in giving the Eagley keeper Tom Macdonald no chance. Then from a corner the stalwart central defender Simon Neary rose well above the pack to smash the header home making it all equal at the break.

But it was Thornton that were pushing and after Eagley left a trailing leg out to the onrushing forward the visitors were given a penalty, where they made no mistake to go 2-1 in front. But Neary had other ideas and when we got a corner he smashed in an identical header into the Thornton net 2-2.

But true to form Eagley let the visitors back in and after a good move their forward managed to shoot under the sprawling Macdonald to make it 3-2. However Eagley hadn’t finished and after a cross into the box Neary again got a looping header onto the ball which was just above the keepers reach for his hat trick and 3-3.

Thornton kept pushing though and again Eagley’s poor defending from a corner allowed them a free header to once again take the lead making it 4-3.

Whaley then made two substitutions bringing on Aaron Mccarthy, and then himself for the hard working Jack Horan, which paid off as Mccarthy stood over the Thornton keeper after he collected the ball, and for some bizzare reason kicked out at Mccarthy giving Eagley the all important penalty. Whaley took control of the ball and calmly slotted it into the corner for the equaliser and 4-4.

I think everybody was resigned to a draw at that point in the game but with only a couple of minutes to go Whaley collected the ball and hit it sweetly from distance with his left foot. It dropped down over the keepers head and with the help of the crossbar landed in the back of the Thorton net to win the match 5-4 !!

That’s two wins and draw from the last three matches giving the Eagles a much needed 7 points from 9, and showing that the lads are giving everything now to stay in the league.

When we caught up with manager Simon Whaley after the game he said ‘The lads were great again today showing that they never give up and don’t know when they’re beat. To win again this week is immense and hopefully the lads are starting to enjoy the feeling’

Meanwhile the reserves were not as successful going down 4 nil to Thornton Cleveleys. They went in 3 nil down at the interval and after conceding again in the second half it was too much to pull back. Manager Scott Derbyshire said ‘The lads struggled today, were much better in the second half but sadly we had already lost it in the first half.’

Both teams get a week off next week, with games resuming on Saturday the 13th December.

Both the 1st team and reserves earned draws on Saturday in two hard fought matches.

The 1st team headed up to Lancaster for a hard game against 4th in the league Slyne with Hest.

The conditions were very difficult on a heavy wet pitch but lads got off to a good start and should of been ahead within 15 minutes. It was then pretty even and went in with no score at the break. Then after ten minutes in there was some great work by new young striker Jack Berry and after beating 3 men and a great pass, it ended up at the feet of Jack Horan who from close range fired home to take the lead.

But then Slyne turned it up a bit and they were pressurising the Eagley defence, until we could not clear a loose ball and it was fired in for their equaliser.

It was then a real scrap which could of gone either way, when Jack Berry produced some more great work where we should of taken a winner but sadly didn’t. Coupled with some great saves from the Eagley keeper Tom Macdonld the score finished 1-1 and another well earned point against a high flying Slyne team. The only sour point was stalwart defender Simon Neary received his marching orders for two yellow cards so will have to sit a game out soon, just when the defence are really starting to show some mettle with the team now picking up 4 points in two games.

Meanwhile the reserves led by Scott Derbyshire were at home against Leyland where again some good pressure paid off seeing Jimmy Smith finding the net to take the lead, and that’s how it stayed until half time. Then more good play from the Eagles and Cliff Collings made it 2 nil. But they couldn’t hold on to the lead and Leyland got one back, and then in the last 5 minutes managed to get another to share the points.

The result says it all really.

Eagley battled and dug deep right from the off, nearly going in front a couple of times but just failing to find the net.

Danny Warburton slid a sublime ball through the middle to the onrushing Jack Horan, who’s attempt was well saved by the Charnock keeper. But It was Carl Grimshaw the ex Eagles striker who was a constant threat for the visitors but between the Eagley defence and keeper Tom Macdonald they managed to keep him out. ‘Warby’ then sent an identical ball through to new signing Tom Price who’s shot was just wide and by now Eagley were getting a good foothold of the game. Then after some great work on the right the breakthrough came, a cross came over onto the head of dependable Jack Horan who made no mistake nodding home to send Eagley 1 up. It was again end to end football but Charnock made a good break into the box, and it fell to who else but Carl Grimshaw as he took a calm finish to push it round the Eagley keeper making it 1-1 at the break.

Eagley came out into the second half pushing for the elusive winner but with no avail, until with about 20 minutes to go it fell to Grimshaw again who found himself one on one with the Eagley keeper, but luckily his run was deemed off side and his goal disallowed. Then Eagley upped their play again fighting and winning every ball as it fell to feet of the industrious Tom Price. Everyone thought he’d taken one touch too many as he turned and shot in the far bottom corner, giving the Charnock keeper no chance! Eagley then continued to fight for every ball showing a passion to win that has not been seen before this season, taking a valuable 3 points from contenders to win the league.

We caught up with manager Simon Whaley after the game to ask him about the win, and his first win in charge, and he replied; ‘Its a great win today, the lads thoroughly deserved it, and if we play like that every week we’ll be fine’
